Border Collies are one of the oldest, most intelligent and active breeds of dogs. They are never bred for specific physical traits, but instead, for the working skills that allow them to perform the very difficult tasks set before them. The one trait that all Border Collies do have in common is called "eye."

This is more of an attitude than anything physical. Simply put, it is the way that this silent working dog controls livestock. Because of this breeding for intelligence and ability rather than for looks, they continue to be considered one of the smartest dogs around. They are capable of the extreme physical activities related to their herding chores on the farm. These tasks require endless running and constant exertion.

Megan controls these sheep by putting "the eye" on them.

Now, for the not so good news. Since this breed is extremely intelligent and active, many people are not prepared to devote enough time to train them. Border Collies require much attention and must be given outlets for their boundless energy. If not given specific jobs or outlets, they will find their own job usually not of one's liking. The owner must remain one step ahead of them which is not always easy to do. A passive lifestyle and Border Collies do not mix.

It is because of this workaholic trait, intelligence and a tremendous desire to please that the Border Collies' energy is able to be directed to useful and fulfilling tasks other than those for which the breed was originally developed. A respectful owner understands that to deprive the Border Collie of a job is to strip it of its passion and spirit. It is the opportunity to work that seems to give this remarkable breed its greatest joy in life.

It is in understanding this, that the Border Collie's horizons have been broadened by owners who have been willing to work hard to channel the energy and potential of the breed into many directions. Not only have we placed dogs on farms where they do the traditional work of herding sheep, cattle, turkeys, hogs, etc., but we have also found owners who are working with their Borders in nontraditional roles. Many Hillside Border Collies have found successful careers on the agility and obedience circuit. Some have been given specific tasks around the home. One of Hillside's dogs even became the Frisbee champion of Ohio. It is in the owner's desire and ability to find the right job for his border collie, that the real potential of the dog can be realized.

One happy border collie!
